Ceramic pottery art is an art of creating objects from a mixture of clays and water, polymer clays, or pottery glazes with various motifs and colors. When you plan to mold ceramic materials for your art works, please ensure all materials and equipment needed are available.

Firstly you have to choose good quality polymer clays. Polymer/ceramic clays are widely available in the market with various brand names, but in this post I recommend you to use clays from AMACO/Brent. There are some types of clays you can use according to your need, low fire clays, high fire clays, self hardening, and so on. Of course, the use of talc-free clays provides maximum results of baking or drying process. One more thing, always store the clays away from direct sunlight, high temperature, and dust. You can wrap it in wax paper or a plastic container.

For creating a more symmetrical clay object, you can use the potter’s wheels, whether electric wheels or traditional ones. In addition, you will also need some basic tools such as a smooth work mat, motive shaping tools, decorating pencils, poly roller, acrylic paints, metallic foils, and others, so that your work looks more professional.

After that you need to provide ceramic pottery kiln or oven for baking the polymer clays. Ceramic pottery oven is different from a home oven, so the practice of using a home oven for baking the clays is not recommended. For experiment or lesson, you don’t have to use a convection oven. It is better for you to use a cheap and small one, about USD$20. Read the manual for baking instruction, in general, most polymer clay projects are baked at 275° for 20 to 25 minutes according to dimension of the object you create. But, as said before, you can use self-hardening clays if you want to skip baking process or you don’t have any kiln or oven. Well, good luck!
